For many law students, securing a government job is a cherished goal. Getting a government job after completing LLB not only offers financial stability but also brings respect and honor in society. This article discusses the competitive exams available for LLB graduates, categorizing them into two types. The first type includes exams specifically for law graduates, while the second type welcomes graduates from any field. I. What are the government jobs for LLB graduates in India?

After completing LLB, the most well-known government exam is the judicial services examination. It's organized by state public service commissions in almost all states. Besides this, many government organizations have their own legal departments to deal with legal matters. Examples include the Reserve Bank of India, State Bank of India, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, and the Securities and Exchange Board of India. These places also hire LLB graduates.

1. Judicial services examination :-

The Provincial Civil Service-Judicial Examination (PCS-J), also known as the judicial services examination, serves as the gateway for law graduates. Successfully passing this exam grants access to the lower judiciary. These examinations are administered by state governments under the guidance of their respective High Courts. 

Eligibility & qualification :-

  • The judicial service examinations are taken at 2 levels:  the lower judiciary level and the higher judiciary level. 
  • The candidate must possess a degree of L.L.B and be enrolled as an advocate under the Advocates Act, 1961. However, an additional seven years of experience is required to be eligible to appear for the higher judiciary exams. 
  • The age limit is usually between 21 years to 35 years and may vary from State to State with some benefit of age relaxation for the candidates in the reserved category.

2. Lower Judiciary Services :-

                                                                To be eligible, candidates need an LLB degree and must be enrolled as an advocate under the Advocates Act of 1961.

3. Higher Judiciary Services :-
                                                                For this, candidates must hold an LLB degree, be enrolled as an advocate under the Advocates Act of 1961, and possess a 7-year experience as a lawyer.

4. RBI Grade B (Legal Officer) :-
                                                                    The Reserve Bank of India conducts recruitment for legal officers as part of RBI Grade B. The selection involves a screening process with a written exam and interview. Legal officers at RBI are responsible for addressing legal matters within different departments, crafting draft legislation, and more.

Eligibility and Qualification :-

  • The candidate must have completed law graduation with a minimum of 50 per cent from a Bar Council of India.
  • Candidate should be proficient in computer applications
5. SEBI Grade A Recruitment :- 

                                                                 The Security and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) hires legal officers and assistant managers for its legal division. Individuals who have finished their law graduation and postgraduation (PG) are eligible to apply for SEBI recruitment. This process involves an initial examination followed by interview rounds.


Eligibility and qualification :-
  • Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree in law.
  • Applicants should not exceed 30 years of age.
6. DMRC Recruitment :-
                                                        Delhi Metro Rail Corporation conducts DMRC recruitment every year for the posts of general manager and legal officer. LLB graduates and those who have completed LLM are eligible for DMR recruitments.

Eligibility and qualification :-
  • The candidates must be an LLB graduate with minimum 55 per cent aggregate marks. 
  • The candidate should have a 5-year experience of working in the legal department of the government of India or any other organisation

II. Government Job Opportunities for LLB Graduates - Broad Spectrum of Government Examinations.

In addition to specialized legal roles, LLB graduates possess the eligibility to view for various other government positions. 4. Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) NTPC Examination :-

                                                                                LLB graduates can explore roles such as commercial apprentice, goods guard, and station master in the Indian Railways by qualifying in the RRB NTPC exam.

5. Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) :-

                                                                     Several PSUs like ONGC, BHEL, and IOCL recruit management trainees and officers through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and other recruitment processes.

6.State Public Service Commission (PSC) Exams :-

                                                                                State PSCs conduct exams for roles such as sub-inspectors, tax officers, and block development officers, where LLB graduates can contribute their legal expertise.
