1. What is the All India Bar Examination (AIBE)?
The All India Bar Examination
(AIBE) is a mandatory national-level certification test conducted by the Bar
Council of India (BCI). It is the final qualifying hurdle that every law
graduate must clear before they can officially practice as an Advocate in
Indian courts. The AIBE was introduced to ensure that law graduates possess the
minimum level of legal competence required to represent clients professionally.
Passing the AIBE grants the
candidate a Certificate of Practice (COP), which is the legal authorisation to
appear in any court, tribunal, or quasi-judicial body across India. Without the
COP, enrollment with a State Bar Council alone is insufficient to practise law.

7. Preparation Strategy & Tips
The AIBE is considered a
moderately difficult exam. With the right approach, it can be cleared
comfortably — even in a few weeks of focused preparation. Here is a strategic
guide:
1.
Understand the Open-Book Format
Since the AIBE is open/semi-open
book, the strategy shifts from rote memorisation to understanding where to find
answers quickly. Organise your bare acts with sticky notes and bookmarks so you
can navigate during the exam.
2.
Master the High-Weightage Subjects First
✓
Constitutional Law (9 Qs) —
Focus on Fundamental Rights, DPSPs, Constitutional Remedies, and landmark
judgments.
✓
CPC (8 Qs) — Understand
suits, orders, decrees, and revision procedures.
✓
IPC (8 Qs) — Study general
exceptions, offences against persons and property.
✓
Cr.P.C. (8 Qs) — Focus on
arrest, bail, trial procedures, and appeals.
✓
Evidence Act (7 Qs) —
Understand types of evidence, burden of proof, and admissibility.
✓
Contract Law (7 Qs) —
Essential elements, void vs. voidable contracts, and remedies for breach.
3. Use
Previous Year Question Papers
AIBE previous year papers (AIBE XV
to AIBE XX) are your best preparation tool. They reveal the pattern of
questions, the depth of knowledge expected, and frequently tested areas.
Attempt at least 5 full mock tests before the exam.
4. Time
Management During the Exam
With 100 questions in 210 minutes
(3.5 hours), you get approximately 2 minutes per question. Prioritise questions
you know well first, then return to tougher ones. Do not spend more than 3 minutes
on any single question.
5.
Prepare a Personal Quick Reference
Create a short cheat sheet (1–2
pages) summarizing key section numbers, landmark cases, and definitions for
each subject. This will help you scan quickly during the open-book exam.
6. Recommended
